Wilde Glut (Reference: Jeff ) is a 1953 American melodrama directed by Hugo Fregonese and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck .

action

In a Latin American country, Jeff Dawson and his friend Dutch Peterson are trying to start a new existence by extracting oil. Their plans are thwarted by bandits who take all valuables from them and blow up the drill hole.

Both ends up penniless in the next town, where Jeff meets the young Sal Donnelly. Jeff and Dutch get the job to transport a load of dynamite. While driving, they are attacked by bandits. Dutch is injured in the leg and has to go to the hospital.

Even though they carried out the order, they do not receive any money because the client is a fraud. Jeff meets Sal Donnelly again. A relationship is developing. Paco Conway, an old friend of Jeff's who got rich from oil, hires him as a foreman.

Marina Conway, Paco's wife, has an interest in his employment since she was with Jeff prior to their marriage. It's over for Jeff. During the work Paco is also blackmailed for money by the bandits. Meanwhile, the situation between Jeff and Marina and the jealous Paco comes to a head.

After an argument, Marina kills her husband to go back to America with Jeff. Jeff rejects her request. The bandits attack Paco's property. Marina is killed. Jeff, Sal and Dutch return to America together.

Reviews

"An overheated melodrama that artificially builds up its conflicts and tends to hysteria and cynicism."

background

Philip Yordan's script was based on his own idea.

For lead actor Gary Cooper it was the third collaboration with producer Milton Sperling and the only film with director Hugo Fregonese after In the Secret Service and The Devil's Brigade . After Here is John Doe it was the second meeting with Barbara Stanwyck and he also worked with Ruth Roman in mortal enmity . The film was shot entirely in Mexico.

The Warner Bros. gave the film in 1954 in the West German cinemas. In this synchronized version, which is still in use today, Gary Cooper got the voice of Heinz Engelmann .

The theme song, Blowing Wild (The Ballad of Black Gold) , sung by Frankie Laine , was also released as a single and reached number two in the UK charts. Laine had already been in the UK top ten the year before with his version of the theme song High Noon from 12 noon , also with Gary Cooper in the lead role.
