The Wildsee , also called Wilder See , is located in the northern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg , northeast of the Ruhestein in the municipal area of Baiersbronn .

The deserted upper Schönmünz Valley begins with the Wildsee-Kar

The lake, far from settlement, is 910 m high, east of the northern Black Forest main ridge in a Worm Ice Age cirque with several moraine walls that is deepened up to 120 m . It can be seen particularly well from the neighboring Seekopf (1055 m above sea level ). The almost round Karsee has an area of 2.4 ha, a depth of 11.5 m and drains over the Schönmünz to the Murg . It is slightly dammed because it was once used as a surge water for the log drift .

The Wildsee belongs to the Black Forest National Park established in 2014 . Since 1939 it was surrounded by the Wilder See - Hornisgrinde nature reserve , which stretched over an area of 766 hectares over the high elevations east of the mountain ridge between Hornisgrinde and Ruhestein and has largely become part of the national park. An area of around 86 hectares around the Wildsee was designated as a protected forest as early as 1911 , making it the oldest natural forest reserve in Baden-Württemberg. In 1998 the area was enlarged to 150 ha.

Occasionally, the Wildsee is confused with the Wildsee near Kaltenbronn, which is 20 km to the northeast and almost at the same height, but is very different .
