Wilflingen is a district of the municipality of Langenenslingen in the district of Biberach in Upper Swabia .

Community structure

The hamlet of Enhofen and the Eisighof farmstead belong to Wilflingen.

Early history

In the area of ​​the district there are 10 to 14 burial mounds from the Bronze Age burial mounds (16th – 14th centuries BC), further earth burial mounds from the Hallstatt culture (8th – 5th centuries BC), a Celtic square hill with a side length of around 100 m and remains of Roman walls are said to have been found in the hamlet of Enhofen.

In connection with the founding history of the St. Georgen Monastery , Wilflingen was first mentioned in a document in 1086. Wilflingen Castle

First mentioned in a document around 1086, Wilflingen once belonged to the Counts of Veringen and the Counts of Grüningen-Landau . Many of the goods there were bought or donated to the Heiligkreuztal monastery . In 1437, the Counts of Hornstein sold their Wilflingen Castle and the towns of Groß- and Klein-Wilflingen to the head chef Hans von Bichishausen. By marrying his daughter in 1454 Werner Schenk von Stauffenberg came into possession.

The ensemble of buildings, consisting of a castle with a walled castle garden, church, parsonage, head forester's office , rent office and Gasthaus zum Löwen, characterize the place to this day. From January to April 1945 part of the Vichy government , including Prime Minister Pierre Laval and 13 ministers, was interned in Wilflinger Castle and monitored by the Gestapo there . In 1912 Wilfingen received its first water pipe and in 1914 it was connected to the power grid. In 1936 Wilflingen was assigned to the now dissolved district of Saulgau .
