The goalkeeper, who grew up in the Kickers youth, belonged continuously to his home club Kickers Offenbach with the exception of the two stations VfR Achern and 1. FC Hochstadt . First as an active player, later in various functions as a trainer, vice-president (for the first time in June 1991), president and youth worker. Kohls, who was professionally secured at the AOK as a councilor, was taken over in the summer of 1979 together with Uwe Bein , Günter Franusch and Hans-Peter Knecht from the Kickers amateurs to the license team of the Elf vom Bieberer Berg. Under coach Horst Heese Offenbach finished eighth in the 2nd division 1979/80 and Kohls had guarded the Kickers case in 29 games. Bernd Fuhr had been in goal in the remaining eleven games. When the Kickers celebrated the runner-up in 1980/81 under the new coach Franz Brungs , Fuhr was in goal in all 38 league games. In his third second division round, 1981/82, Kohls was number one with 26 appearances, Ulrich Schauberger was in the OFC goal in twelve games. Offenbach came third and was able to play two relegation games against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in June 1982. In both games (0: 1/1: 2) Kohls was in the goal of the team led by interim coach Kurt Geinzer around Michael Kutzop , Walter Krause , Bein and Franusch.

On December 4, 1974, the Offenbach amateur goalkeeper was substituted in for Heinz-Josef Koitka in the second half of the international match between the German national soccer team of amateurs and Italy . The DFB selection won the game 2-0.

In the summer of 1982 Kohls ended his playing career. The former goalkeeper acted as a coach at Offenbach 1985/86 in the amateur league Hessen and won the championship; he just missed the return to the 2nd Bundesliga in the promotion round. Kohls jumped three times at the end of each round in the series 1994/95 in the Regionalliga Süd, 1996/97 (Oberliga Hessen) and 2000/01 (again Regionalliga Süd).
