Wilfried Seidel (politician)

Wilfried Seidel (born August 21, 1939 in Bannewitz ) is a former German politician ( SED ) and was Lord Mayor of Potsdam from 1984 to 1989 . Seidel was convicted in June 1990 for falsifying the results of the local elections in the GDR in May 1989.

Life

Seidel, the son of a shunting master, went to the National People's Army (NVA) for three years after high school and an apprenticeship as a machine and repair fitter in 1957 . In 1960 he joined the SED and began studying at the engineering school in Meißen , which he completed in 1963 as an engineer for power and work machines. He worked as a mechanic until 1964 and then became technical manager.

In 1965/66, Seidel completed a course at the SED district party school and in 1970 became deputy chairman of the Zossen district council . In 1976 he completed a correspondence course at the Technical University of Dresden as a university engineer for mechanical engineering and studied from 1976 to 1979 at the Karl Marx party university of the SED, where he obtained a diploma in social sciences .

From 1979 to 1984 Seidel was chairman of the council of the Rathenow district and in 1984 succeeded Brunhilde Hanke as Lord Mayor of Potsdam. During his term of office, the twinning between Potsdam and Bonn was signed . In May 1989 Seidel was involved in the fraudulent local elections in the GDR . On May 22, 1989, Seidel was replaced with a third of the Potsdam city council. After the fall of the Wall in the GDR, Seidel and his deputy Marlies Nopens and Lothar Hölzer, the city councilor for housing, were charged with election fraud in June 1990 . Seidel was sentenced to eight months suspended prison sentence.

From June to December 1989 Seidel was chairman of the committee of the workers and farmers inspection in Potsdam. In 1990 Seidel was director of the housing industry at VEB municipal housing management in the Stahnsdorf-Kleinmachnow industrial area. After 1990 he worked as a self-employed insurance salesman.
