Wilfried Wurth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilfried Wurth (born February 10, 1957 in Solingen ; † May 8, 2019 ) was a German physicist and university professor . He was an expert in X-ray spectroscopy and was particularly concerned with the investigation of ultrafast processes such as the observation of chemical reactions on surfaces in real time and the dynamics of electrons in solids and at interfaces.

Life and research

Wurth studied physics at the Technical University of Munich from 1976 to 1983 and received his doctorate there from 1983 to 1987 at the chair for surface physics. He then conducted research from 1988 to 1989 at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San José , USA. He then worked as a research assistant until 1995 and senior assistant at the chair for surface physics in the Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich until 1999, and completed his habilitation in experimental physics in 1995 . In 2000 he became Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Hamburg and since 2007 has been head of the Advanced Study Group at the University of Hamburg at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). From 2007 to 2013 he was the spokesman for the BMBF research focus FLASH, the first research focus in the field of condensed matter. Research on the free electron laser within the framework of the joint funding was bundled in this research focus. In 2014 he became Scientific Director of FLASH. During his time as the scientific director of FLASH, the FLASH II expansion project built the second undulator section for light generation and the second experimental hall for the free-electron laser. In DESY's strategy process, which was completed in 2018, he played a key role in developing the visions for the future of the pioneer facility. Most recently, he was in charge of creating the conceptual design report for its further development to FLASH2020 +.
