Wilhelm August Kobbé
Wilhelm August Kobbé (born April 24, 1802 in Idstein , † September 29, 1881 in New York City ) was a German diplomat .
Kobbé was born as the son of the bailiff Friedrich Siegfried Kobbé. The family belonged to the Nassau educated class and its members had been in the civil and military service of the Nassau duke for several generations.
From 1839 to 1866 served as Kobbe General of the Duchy of Nassau in the United States, where he worked in a prestigious on the east coast family in New London ( Connecticut einheiratete). In his new home he enjoyed an excellent social position and took part in numerous charitable endeavors, especially those that benefited German immigrants. In New York he was a co-founder of the German Association and supported the establishment of the German Society. After the annexation of Nassau by Prussia , he worked as an independent businessman in New York.
His sons also achieved socially respected positions:
- Wilhelm August became general in the US Federal Army ,
- Philipp Ferdinand was a major in the National Guard and Vice President of the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company and
- Gustav became a well-known music critic.
