Wilhelm Beck

Wilhelm Beck , Danish Johan Vilhelm Beck (born December 30, 1829 in Ørslev, Ørslev Sogn (Slagelse Kommune) ; † September 30, 1901 ibid) was a Danish Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and chairman of the Inner Mission in Denmark ( Kirkelig Forening for den Indre Mission i Danmark ).

Life

Wilhelm Beck was a son of the pastor of Ørslev on Zealand ; he was the youngest of four brothers. In 1840 the father was transferred to Ubby ( Ubby Sogn ) near Kalundborg , also on Zealand. From 1843 to 1849 he attended the scholars' school in Slagelse and then went to the University of Copenhagen to study Protestant theology . After his candidate exams, he took a job as a teacher in Kalundborg. During this time he read Søren Kierkegaard's works. In particular, Kiekegaard's The Moment shaped him very much.

At the end of 1855, his father suffered a stroke . Beck returned to Ubby to assist his father as an assistant chaplain. At Easter 1856 he was ordained pastor by the Bishop of Zealand, Hans Lassen Martensen . Beck stayed in Ubby until his father's death in 1865 and until the end of the year of grace granted to the family. In the summer of 1859 he had a conversion experience.

At the turn of the year 1865/1866 he was appointed pastor of the parish of Ørum ( Norddjurs municipality ) in north-east Jutland . He stayed here until 1874. He was joined by a large circle of inspiring followers, and the traces of his activity could be seen from afar. When the parish of Ørslev became vacant, he applied for it and was introduced here on March 29, 1874. So he returned to the place where he was born and where he had spent the first ten years of his life. He worked here for 27 years until his death.

He was married to Nina Charlotte, born in 1860. Staffeldt (1834-1905). The couple had 10 children.

Inner mission

On September 13, 1861, Beck in Stenlille was a founding member of the “Church Association for the Inner Mission in Denmark” and became editor of the newspaper for Inner Mission ( den indre Missions Tidende ). He developed into a much sought-after travel preacher and engine of the association, which combined elements of pietism , community movement and Grundtvig's ideas . In 1865 he published his first sermon book of fourteen sermons after his first preaching tour through Jutland . His first postille, New and Old , appeared in 1869. In Ørslev he wrote two postils, From the source of life ( Fra Livets Kilde ) and On the way of life ( Paa Livets Vej ) as well as the devotional book for house devotions A little treasure chest ( En lille skat box ). He added a supplement ( Annezeet ) and an illustrated family paper to the newspaper . Some works have been translated into German by Simon Simonsen (1857–1906), pastor in Bülderup ( North Schleswig ).
