Günter Weitling (* 1935 in Haderslev , North Schleswig , Denmark ) is an Evangelical Lutheran theologian , church historian and author .

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1955 at the Haderslev Cathedral School, he studied theology and oriental studies in Bethel / Bielefeld , Mainz , Kiel and Copenhagen . This was followed by a study of pedagogy in Breklum and a stay at the preacher's seminary in Preetz . From 1962 to 1963 he was pastor in Jörl ( Schleswig-Flensburg district ), 1963 to 1965 Sønderborg ( North Schleswig ), 1965 to 1970 at the Højdevangskirke in Copenhagen. At the same time he completed a legal traineeship at the grammar school of Tårnby with the subjects religion , history and antiquity . In 1970 he received his doctorate from the University of Kiel to Dr. theol. From 1970 to 1987 he worked as senior teacher at the Danish grammar school in Sønderborg. From 1987 until his retirement in 2000 he was again pastor of the Danish People's Church for the German part of the community in Sønderborg. At the same time he worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Church History and Church Archeology at the University of Kiel. Weitling was also the founder and from 1986 to 2003 scientific director of the Deutsches Museum Nordschleswig in Sønderborg.

Günther Weitling has written and edited a large number of books and papers since 1971. They focus on the church history and mission history of Schleswig as well as the history of the German minority in North Schleswig .

Günter Weitling lives in Padborg ( Denmark ).
