Wilhelm Bockslaff ( Latvian Vilhelms Bokslafs ; born October 12 . Jul / 24. October  1858 greg. In Riga , Governorate of Livonia ; † 9. March 1945 in Poznan ) was an architect in Riga. He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of the eclectic , neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau trends that still shape the cityscape today .

Life

Wilhelm Ludwig Nikolai Bockslaff came from a German-speaking Riga merchant family. His grandfather was a co-founder of the first Baltic linen weaving mill. From 1878 he studied architecture at the Riga Polytechnic and became a member of the Corps Rubonia . After completing his studies, he was employed as an assistant at the Polytechnic and as an employee in the Koch architecture office. After he had designed numerous private houses, he soon received orders for large building projects in Riga; In addition, Wilhelm Bockslaff was primarily concerned with the preservation and reconstruction of historical buildings such as Ropa Castle ( Straupe ). He went through some of the most difficult phases in Latvian history : Russification , the 1905 Russian Revolution , the October Revolution , the Latvian War of Independence , the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (1918–1920) and the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940 . As a Baltic German he had to respond to the call “ Heim ins Reich ” and leave Riga in 1939 . He died during the continuous bombing in the Battle of Poznan . "One could not think of a funeral, and the daughters, after wrapping the deceased father in a blanket, buried him in the courtyard."
