Wilhelm Christoph Hoyer (born July 16, 1826 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ; † February 2, 1897 there ) was a German manufacturer and local politician .

Career

Hoyer was the son of the Oldenburg merchant Christian Hoyer (1794–1865) and his first wife Anna born. Mehrens (1794-1830). He was thus a descendant of a Danish farming family who immigrated to Denmark when Oldenburg belonged to them.

After studying chemistry for two years in Göttingen and Paris, Hoyer joined the Donnerschweer factories for vinegar, chocolate , stearin candles and his father's brewery in 1848 . In addition, he was a member of the Oldenburg State Parliament for the National Liberal Party (NLP) from 1869 to 1884 . In the elections to the Reichstag in 1881, he narrowly failed in a runoff election.

In branches of mineralogy, Hoyer, who had an extensive mineral collection, was considered an authority. He also distinguished himself through commercial skill and foresight. As chairman, he reorganized the trade and commerce association that his father had co-founded in 1840, the forerunner of the Oldenburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry . Under his responsibility, two trade exhibitions of the association in 1876 and 1885, which received a lot of public attention, were organized. Inspired by this success, he complied with a request that was often expressed in this connection and, in collaboration with the craftsmen's association, founded the Oldenburger Kunstgewerbeverein , which developed well under his chairmanship and was able to celebrate the inauguration of the Landesgewerbemuseum in 1891 . He also belonged to the literary and sociable association of Oldenburg.

Hoyer died in an accident when he fell into an oil vat and drowned while inspecting the factory premises.

family

Hoyer was born with Mathilde Griepenkerl married. Of his seven children, Hans Hoyer (1856–1913) also became a manufacturer. His granddaughter Margarethe Gramberg b. Hoyer (1895–1968) was a well-known Oldenburg local politician, member of the Lower Saxony state parliament and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
