Wilhelm Eitner

Wilhelm Eitner (born January 28, 1843 in Iglau ; † October 13, 1921 in St. Christophen ) was an Austrian chemist . He was a specialist in tanning .

Life

Wilhelm Eitner was the son of a draper from Iglau. He studied chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology . He first worked as a chemist in leather factories in Vienna and Prague . In 1872 he became vice director of the leather factory in Sloup .

Eitner founded the world's first chemical and technical research institute for the leather industry in Vienna in 1874, which he headed for 40 years until his retirement. Also in 1874 he founded the trade journal Der Gerber . He edited their technical part until 1913 and published most of his specialist articles there. Eitner did research in various areas of geranium chemistry and technology. He introduced the use of sodium sulfide and promoted the industrialization of tanning. As a consultant for the leather industry, he was sent to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 . There, an international jury selected him as a universal expert for the leather industry. He was also a member of the advisory board in the Austrian Ministry of Commerce and in 1892 became a permanent member of the customs advisory board.

Wilhelm Eitner married Ernestine Janesch in 1878, the daughter of a Klagenfurt leather factory owner. Several children emerged from the marriage, including Marianne Eitner, who married the writer and National Socialist Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer .

The Eitnergasse in Vienna- Erlaa was named after Wilhelm Eitner in 1977 .
