Wilhelm Friedrich Volger (born March 31, 1794 in Neetze ; † March 6, 1879 Lüneburg ) was a German school rector , educator and historian of the city of Lüneburg.

Life

Volger was orphaned at the age of three and was raised by relatives in Lüneburg. After visiting the Johanneum Lüneburg , he first studied theology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 1812 , later philology with the subjects geography and history. He became a member of the Corps Hannovera . In 1815 he graduated with a PhD. phil. and received his first position at his old school in Lüneburg, where he became subconstructor after two years and rector after another 13 years. He held this post until his retirement as a teacher.

In 1834, under his leadership, the Realgymnasium was established as a branch of the Johanneum as a supplement to the Latin school . From then on, his primary interest as a schoolboy was in these real classes. He wrote several school books in his subjects, which were also repeatedly published. This included a world history as well as the history of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg or thematic treatises on the history of the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg and its citizens.

After his school service he was retired as the city ​​librarian and city ​​archivist of the city of Lüneburg. Between the ages of 75 and 83, he edited, among other publications, the document book of the city of Lüneburg with over 1,500 documents.

From 1828 to 1873 Volger was consistently master of the chair at the Lüneburg Freemason Lodge Selene founded by Adolf von Spörcken .

His son was the geologist Otto Volger .
