Gustav Wilhelm Emil Görges (born April 22, 1813 in Braunschweig ; † December 25, 1894 there ) was a German post office worker and writer .

Life

The son of from Peine originating Cantor Christoph Friedrich Görges (1776-1852) and his wife Katharine Marie Dieterike born, Pape attended the Collegium Carolinum from 1832 , where he studied commercial science. From 1833 to 1875 Görges was an official at the ducal court post office in Braunschweig. He is the author of extensive publications on the postal and local history of Germany, especially the states of Braunschweig and Hanover . Görges was married to Emilie Frohwein from Schöningen . His grave is in the Brunswick cathedral cemetery .

Görges self-published his three-volume main work, Fatherland Stories and Memories, which he composed between 1843 and 1845 . In addition to historical facts about events, places and people, it also contained anecdotes and legends . Since only as many copies were printed as there were subscribers at the time , it was soon sold out. For the 50th anniversary of the throne of the Brunswick Duke Wilhelm in 1881, the second edition was published under the direction of Ferdinand Spehr , who completely revised and expanded the work. Spehr had already contributed to the first edition. The third and last edition was published in 1929 by Franz Fuhse .
