Wilhelm Güthling

Wilhelm August Karl Güthling (born March 5, 1906 in Calau ; † October 15, 1971 in Siegen ) was an archivist and historian . He headed the city archives of Siegen and was an important researcher of the regional history of the Siegerland .

Güthling completed his training at the Prussian Institute for Archival Studies and then continued his history studies. He found his first job in 1933 at the Düsseldorf City Archives . In 1938 he moved to the Reich Archives in Potsdam. After the end of the war he worked at the archives advice center in Westphalia in Münster. His early academic work focused on French and Luxembourg history, as well as historical cartography .

In 1949 he succeeded Hans Kruse, who had already died in 1941, in his various functions in Siegen and in Siegerland. Güthling thus became head of the Siegerland Museum, the City Archives and the City Library of Siegen. In 1956 he received the title of archive director and from then on concentrated on the work for the city archive and the scientific library in Siegen. In 1958 Güthling was an important source of inspiration for the establishment of the Siegerland research center, which he headed from then on. In addition, he founded and directed the series of publications Siegerland Contributions to History and Regional Studies and was editor-in-chief of Siegerland , the magazine of the Siegerland Homeland and History Association . He also acted as managing director of the association.

From 1950 on, his historical work concentrated on the Siegerland, with the economic history of the region with the great importance of mining and iron processing being a focus. His local history work extended far beyond the city of Siegen, especially into the Westerwald . In addition, he remained particularly connected to historical cartography. He could no longer complete the edition of the Siegen document book.
