family

Goßler was a son of Johann Heinrich Goßler (1775-1842), Hamburg senator and owner of the trading company Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co . His older brother Hermann Goßler was Hamburg's mayor from 1874 .

Life

On January 1, 1836, Goßler became a partner in the company Joh.Berenberg, Gossler & Co. Since Goßler demanded after the economic crisis of 1857 that Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co should stop doing banking, there was a dispute with his brother Johann Heinrich Goßler (1805-1879). As a result, Goßler left Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co in 1860 and founded his own company, Wm. Gossler , which continued the goods business of Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co in the traditional Mortzenhaus . Goßler was one of the founders of the Hamburg-Bremer Fire Insurance Company in 1854 ; he was a member of the company's supervisory board until his death. From 1866 to 1895 he was a member of the supervisory board of the Norddeutsche Bank .

In addition to his professional activity, Goßler was involved in various ways in local self-government. In 1849 he was elected to the Commerzdeputation and was sent to various deputations by the latter. In 1853 he acted as President of the Commerzdeputation. From 1857 he was a member of the bank deputation for 3 years, after which he was appointed a non-lawyer member of the higher court for 2 years.

Goßler was a member of the Hamburg citizenship from 1863 to 1868.

On April 29, 1873 he was elected senior elder in the parish of Sankt Petri and remained a member of the senior elders' college until his death.

In the civil military , Goßler was adjutant of the general staff from 1845 and 1849 , and from 1848 as first lieutenant .
