Wilhelm Herbert Koch (born March 11, 1905 in Linden ; † January 29, 1983 in Bochum ) was a German journalist and writer. His character friend Anton achieved cult status in the Ruhr area.

Life

Koch was born in Linden, now a district of Bochum, as the son of a mine manager and, like his father, initially worked in mining. He later studied law at the Philipps University of Marburg and was active in the (expelled) Corps Rhenania Strasbourg in 1925 . He switched to journalism and from 1929 was a trainee at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitung in Essen. He later worked as a sports editor for the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Essen. From 1954 on, Koch wrote the weekly column Kumpel Anton in the weekend edition of WAZ for 25 years . The glosses written in Ruhrdeutsch were later published in anthologies. Buddy Anton achieved cult status in the Ruhr area. At the award of the Federal Cross of Merit in the name of the Prime Minister, Bochum's Lord Mayor Heinz Eikelbeck said :

“The person from the Ruhr area is embodied in the friend Anton. This original - which has long since become a well-known term - has been the subject of academic papers that deal with folklore as well as linguistic and sociological aspects. With your friend Anton you have succeeded in grasping the reality of life in this room down to the last, strengthening the self-confidence of the local people and presenting the area as a unified historical space. With your buddy Anton you achieved an excellent linguistic achievement, not least because of your excellent powers of observation. "
