Wilhelm Hilden

Wilhelm Hilden (Latinized: Guilelmus Hildenius ; * 1551 in Berlin ; † September 19, 1587 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German philosopher , philologist , mathematician and university professor .

Life

Hilden was the son of a citizen in Berlin. At the age of 14 he went to the University of Frankfurt (Oder) , later he switched to the University of Leipzig . There he was appointed professor of logic and ethics in 1575 . He gave up this professorship in 1581 to answer a call back to his hometown. There he became rector of the Berlin Grammar School for the Gray Monastery , which under his direction placed a focus on the Greek language. Greek was taught for 13 hours in the first grades and 6 hours in the second grades. During his time in Berlin, he took over the printing company from Leonhard Thurneysser , who left Berlin in 1584. After Thurneysser left, Hilden took care of his own prints in the print shop.

Hilden himself left Berlin in 1586 to take up a position as a full professor of mathematics and Greek at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). There he died shortly afterwards in office. In his literary work he mainly focused on Aristotle .
