Wilhelm Karl Arnold (born October 14, 1911 in Nuremberg ; † December 12, 1983 in Würzburg ) was a German psychologist and professor of psychology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Live and act

Arnold graduated from high school in 1931 and then studied mathematics, physics, psychology, education, philosophy and economic history in Munich . Since 1931 he was a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Tuiskonia Munich in the CV . From 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, he had to do military service. After the end of the war, he was head of career counseling at the Federal Agency for Employment and Unemployment Insurance in Nuremberg until 1953. In 1953 he was appointed to the professorship for psychology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

In 1962 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Tisserant and invested in Paderborn Cathedral on September 29, 1962 by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the Order. From 1976 to 1983 he was the first chief commander in the newly established commandery of Würzburg of the order of knights.

Research and Teaching

From 1953 to 1978 he was professor of psychology at the University of Würzburg . From 1964 to 1967 he was rector of this university and chairman of the German Society for Psychology .

The main subject of his research interests was applied psychology: forensic psychology , work psychology - here above all talent development and aptitude; also personality psychology ; as well as practice-related content regarding student internships (see literature list).

His best-known work is the three-volume Lexicon of Psychology published by Herder Verlag (1971/1973), Freiburg, which he shared with the two psychologists Hans Jürgen Eysenck , London, (behavioral therapy) and Richard Meili , Bern, who were known in the second half of the 20th century , ( Psychological Diagnostics , Thinking Psychology ) as editor. The lexicon brings together many psychologists of the time as authors. It is thus also a mirror of the research focus of the time; and still very reliable as a reference work in the 21st century.

politics

Since the end of the war, Arnold was a member of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) in the Middle Franconia section. In 1967 he was elected second chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation . From 1968 to 1973 he was a member of the Bavarian Senate (Universities and Academies Group), from 1972 he was chairman of the cultural policy committee.
