Wilhelm Lommen (* 1839 in Kleve ; † 1895 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

The son of Cornelius Wilhelm Lommen and his wife Gertrude, née van Wickeren, grew up in Kleve, a town in the Prussian Rhine Province . Only the winter semester 1859/1860, in which he enrolled with Carl Müller , who had held a position as a professor of history painting since 1857, is documented as a study time at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Müller directed the so-called Antikensaal, which students were required to visit before entering a painting class. Lommen may have prepared in a drawing school before enrolling at the academy. There is no apparent influence of the “ Nazarene ” Carl Müller on his later work. Afterwards, Lommen probably continued his education privately - perhaps in Holland - and then settled in Düsseldorf. It was not until 1872 that he joined the Malkasten artists' association , to which he belonged until 1895. He was also a member of the General German Art Cooperative .

Lommen's first known painting was titled Holländische Heide and was shown in 1868 on the occasion of an exhibition by the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf. The painting Motif on the Lower Rhine with Thunderstorms hung in the exhibition rooms at Bismeyer & Kraus in 1874 , a picture with the title Apple Harvest was acquired by the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1875. Other landscape paintings such as Heidelandschaft (1882), Bei Kleve (1888) or Approaching Thunderstorm showed Lommen's characteristic use of brownish-red colors as well as the landscape formations typical of his work and their seasonal and weather-related moods. In 1882 he showed the pictures The Chausseewalze and The Fire in the neighboring village in his hometown of Kleve , which were particularly praised for their horse representations. In doing so, the artist occasionally combined a "late romantic" looking small-scale image conception with elements of current affairs, for example in the paintings horse-drawn cart at the coal gate in Düsseldorf or the flood on the Lower Rhine , in which he incorporated the current dike and road works near Neuss in the given situation. In the picture Encounter in the Country, he added realistic details such as the farmers' tools and clothing or the layout of their farms to the depiction of the windmills and church towers typical of the Lower Rhine region, the cows lying down and flowering fruit trees.

The painting Expansion of Jülicher Strasse (road construction work in front of Neuss) from 1878 is kept in the Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss, the painting Encounter in the Country is kept by the Volmer Collection Foundation in Wuppertal . Two sheets of caricatures are in the archive of the Malkasten Artists' Association in Düsseldorf.
