Wilhelm Lorey (born January 23, 1873 in Frankfurt am Main , † July 3, 1955 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German mathematician .

Live and act

After attaining higher maturity in 1891 at the Städtisches Gymnasium Hannover, Wilhelm Lorey studied mathematics at the universities of Halle, Munich and Göttingen. After passing his state examination, Lorey stayed in Göttingen for special mathematical studies, where he was a member of the first German seminar for insurance science, founded in 1895. In 1901 he received his doctorate at the University of Halle on the geometric mean, in particular on the approximation of cubic irrationalities that it brought about . As early as 1896, Lorey was in the higher school service, initially in Leer , Quakenbrück , Remscheid and Görlitz , and from 1909 as Vice-Rector at the Oberrealschule in Minden .

On April 16, 1912, Lorey was appointed as the successor to Hermann Raydt (1851-1914) as director of the public commercial college in Leipzig, which he headed until the end of 1932 for 20 years. From 1920 he also worked until 1933, initially as a lecturer and later as a lecturer, at the newly founded Institute for Insurance Sciences at the University of Leipzig. After the end of the Second World War, he began to hold a regular colloquium on the history of mathematics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and held an honorary professorship there from 1953.

Lorey's academic interest lay primarily in the history of mathematics and mathematics teaching in Germany in the 19th century. For his achievements, he was elected to the mathematics and astronomy section of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina on November 4, 1918 ( matriculation number 3407 ). On March 4, 1953, he received the Federal Cross of Merit . His estate, consisting of manuscripts, travelogues, diaries, card boxes, letters and collectibles is in the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library ( call number Na 42).
