Wilhelm Ludwig von der Groeben (* July 2, 1690 , † March 28, 1760 in Magdeburg ) was a Prussian Real Secret Budget and War Minister.

Life

Wilhelm Ludwig was a son of the heir to Karschau, Rückgarben and Bollendorf and Polish majors Johann Friedrich von der Groeben (1670–1698) and his wife Catharina Barbara, née von der Groeben (1668–1701) from the Beeslack family.

Career

Groeben studied law from 1711 at the University of Königsberg and on September 27, 1717 was extraordinary tribunal councilor in Königsberg . On August 7, 1723 received the position of the court judge. From 1724 to 1745 he was President of the Samland Consistory, and in June 1740 he was appointed Prussian District Administrator. On October 13, 1743 he was court judge in Königsberg. Groeben worked for Cocceji in the judicial reform in East Prussia . On October 28, 1751 he was appointed minister. Member of the Prussian government and president of the court. On August 26, 1753 he became president of the Higher Appeal Court. When the Russian troops occupied East Prussia during the Seven Years' War , he fled to Magdeburg, where he died in 1760.

His first wife was Beate Eleonore von Hoverbeck (1708–1725) since November 23, 1724 . After her untimely death, on May 27, 1727, he married Margarete Emerentia von Kanitz († 1729) from the Podangen family , most likely a daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm von Kanitz (1656-1719) from his first marriage. His only daughter Katharina Sophie Auguste (1728–1750) married the later Minister Joachim Christian von Blumenthal (1720–1800). The later Real Secret Budget and War Minister Friedrich Gottfried von der Groeben (1726–1799) was his nephew.
