Wilhelm Lynen (born November 6, 1861 in Stolberg (Rhineland) , † July 23, 1920 in Munich ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor .

Life

Wilhelm Lynen studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1882 to 1886 . At the beginning of his studies he became a member of the academic association Delta, the later Corps Delta. He then was assistant to Adolf von Gizycki in 1889 and 1890 . During this time he also served as the Royal Government Construction Supervisor for mechanical engineering. After successfully passing the second state examination , he was appointed royal government master builder for mechanical engineering in 1891.

A month later, already living in Dessau , he resigned from the civil service at his own request and went to the Oechelhaeuser & Junkers gas engine test station founded by Wilhelm Oechelhäuser in 1890 at the Dessau gas works . Wilhelm Oechelhäuser, Wilhelm Lynen and August Wagener developed a double-piston two-stroke engine which, due to its high compression compared to the Otto four-stroke engine, had halved fuel consumption and two and a half times less waste heat. In 1892/93 the first two machines with an output of 116 hp were manufactured.

In 1895 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg . As a private lecturer, he received the title of professor in 1896 and was appointed to the Royal Technical Examination Office in Berlin, Department I, for the years 1896 to 1899. On October 1, 1896, he became professor for mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. In 1897 he was appointed a member of the Royal Technical Examination Office in Aachen. In 1899 his membership was confirmed for the period from 1899 to 1902. In 1901 he was elected to the RWTH Senate for the year 1901/1902.

In August 1901 Lynen was appointed as the successor to Otto von Grove as a full professor of mechanical engineering at the mechanical engineering department of the Technical University of Munich . From 1904 to 1907 he was head of the mechanical engineering department of the TH Munich. From 1908 to 1909 he was chairman of the Bavarian District Association of the Association of German Engineers .

In addition to his work on the gas engine, the construction of electronic machines was one of his main focuses.

One of his sons was the biochemist and Nobel Prize winner Feodor Lynen .
