Wilhelm Mangold (composer)

Johann Wilhelm Mangold (born November 19, 1796 Darmstadt ; † May 23, 1875 there ) was a German violinist , composer and court conductor .

Life and career

Wilhelm Mangold comes from an old family of musicians in Darmstadt. The original home of the family is Groß-Umstadt in the Odenwald. From 1810 he worked as a violinist in the court orchestra in Darmstadt and from 1810 to 1811 (like Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer ) he was a student of Abbé Georg Joseph Vogler . From 1815 to 1818 he studied in Paris with Luigi Cherubini , Étienne-Nicolas Méhul and Rodolphe Kreutzer . In 1819 he returned to Darmstadt as a chamber musician . In 1825 he was appointed Grand Ducal Hessian court conductor of the court opera orchestra, from 1830 he was then conductor of the court orchestra and the opera of the court theater. In 1834 he traveled to London, only to return to Darmstadt the following year. From 1858 he was retired. Mangold was a member of the Darmstadt Masonic Lodge Johann der Evangelist zur Eintracht and composer of Masonic music.

  • 1838: Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Ludwig
  • 1849–1850: Chairman of the administrative board of the court theater
