Wilhelm Menzel

Wilhelm Menzel , pseudonym : Menzel-Willem , (born January 8, 1898 in Obersteinkirch , Lauban district , Silesia ; † January 23, 1980 in Dortmund ) was a German folklorist and philologist , a collector and editor of Silesian texts.

Life

After attending the teachers' seminar, Wilhelm Menzel worked as a primary school teacher from 1919 to 1926 and then studied philosophy, German, history and folklore at the universities of Leipzig and Breslau, completing the state examination in 1933. In 1934 he married Klara Heuer, who later had five children. In the same year Wilhelm Menzel began teaching at the college for teacher training in Hirschberg in the Giant Mountains ,

1938 Menzel at the University of Wroclaw with a thesis on the subject of mother and child in the Silesian folk beliefs and customs to Dr. phil. PhD. Menzel's first publication took place during the Third Reich - the sociable song collection Fröhliche Abendrunde (1938), which was intended “for use in the Nazi associations, in homes, schools and houses”.

After the expulsion, he continued teaching at the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund from 1947 . In 1954 he was appointed professor there.

From 1948 onwards his numerous editions of Silesian homeland texts began. a. by the Lower Silesian homeland poet Ernst Schenke . Most of this was done in anthologies , but occasionally he also reissued Silesian poets in separate editions , such as for Hermann Stehr's hundredth birthday .

In the scientific field, Wilhelm Menzel presented excellent works on the philology, literature and folklore of Silesia. He spread, and not just in front of Silesians, something like the “ Silesian Kingdom of Heaven ”, which is a universe of its own.

In 1978 he was awarded the Silesian sign of Landsmannschaft Silesia .
