Wilhelm Prentzel

Wilhelm Prentzel (born July 28, 1878 in Hagen , † May 2, 1945 in Berlin ) was a German naval officer , most recently an admiral in World War II .

Life

Prentzel occurred on April 7, 1896 as a midshipman in the Imperial navy one, completed his ship training until September 20, 1898 u. a. on the cruiser frigate Stosch and then went to the naval school. There he was first on 1 January 1899. Midshipman appointed and on September 30, 1899. Ensign promoted. Prentzel spent the next six months on board the Panzer Corvette Sachsen and then until March 20, 1902 as an officer on watch on the training ships Moltke and Stosch . This was followed by the transfer of the first lieutenant to the sea (since March 15, 1902) to the East Asia Squadron , where he remained until September 1905. After his return to Germany he was watch officer on the small cruiser Hamburg until mid-April 1907 , then on the ships of the line Kaiser Wilhelm II and Germany . On September 28, 1906 he was promoted to lieutenant captain. Prentzel was then employed as an adjutant on the staff of the Baltic Sea Naval Station and from October 1, 1908 to September 14, 1910 as a navigation officer on the small cruisers Hamburg and Dresden . Subsequently, Prentzel came again as an adjutant until September 30, 1912 in the staff of the naval station of the Baltic Sea. Prentzel was transferred to the Great Cruiser Moltke on October 1 as a navigational officer and promoted to Corvette Captain on September 6, 1913 . In the same position, Prentzel came to the Great Cruiser Seydlitz on June 23, 1914 and stayed here until mid-June 1917 after the outbreak of the First World War. He was employed as first admiral staff officer until January 1918 and then as chief of staff until August 1918. At the same time Prentzel was in command of the small cruiser Niobe from December 1, 1917 to August 12, 1918. From September 4 to December 18, 1918, he commanded the small cruiser Bremse .

After the end of the war, Prentzel was taken over into the Reichsmarine and on February 5, 1920 first promoted to frigate captain and on November 30, 1920 to sea captain. As such, he was Chief of Staff at the North Sea Naval Station until the end of September 1921. He then acted as head of the nautical department (BH) in the General Naval Office until February 14, 1924, and then commanded the Alsace liner until September 22, 1925 . After that he was in command of the naval forces of the North Sea until the end of September 1927 and was promoted to Rear Admiral on October 1, 1926 . On October 4, 1927, he was appointed head of the General Naval Office in the Reichswehr Ministry , and a year later, on October 1, 1928, he was promoted to Vice Admiral . Prentzel was put up for disposition on November 15, 1930 and removed from the Navy on November 30, 1930 while simultaneously conferring the character of admiral.

Placed at the disposal of the Navy on January 1, 1939, Prentzel was appointed Naval Commissioner for East Prussia on August 25, 1939 . Dismissed from this post on September 9, 1939, he was at the disposal of the Commander in Chief of the Navy until his discharge from active military service on November 30, 1944. In the meantime, Prentzel had received the patent for his rank on February 1, 1941 .
