Wilhelm Sellschopp
Wilhelm Sellschopp , in full Wilhelm Karl Georg Ludwig , (born October 13, 1862 in Schwiggerow , † June 7, 1938 in Hamburg ) was a German philatelist and founder and namesake of Hamburg's oldest postage stamp house.
Life
Wilhelm Sellschopp was the first son and the oldest of eight children of the middle-class manor owner August Friedrich Wilhelm Sellschopp (1835–1913) and his wife Emilie, née. Strempel (1842-1916). The educator Adolf Sellschopp (1862–1938) was his younger brother. Two of his sisters married professors of theology: Anna (1867–1948) married Erich Schaeder and was the mother of Hildegard Schaeder , Martha (1878–1946) married Wilhelm Lütgert . Gesine Palmer is his great-great-niece.
He grew up in Groß Stove and attended school in Waren (Müritz) . He did a commercial apprenticeship in Lübeck .
In 1891 he emigrated to the USA and opened a stamp shop in San Francisco ; he was the first to introduce postage stamp auctions on the west coast of the United States . From 1892 to 1901 he edited the journal Filatelic Facts and Fallacies: a monthly magazine for stamp collectors and dealers .
In 1899 he founded a branch in Hamburg and returned there in 1901. After the destruction of the business in San Francisco by the earthquake in San Francisco in 1906 , which left his inventory intact, he gave up and concentrated on the business in Hamburg. The Hamburg store soon moved to larger rooms in Barkhof, Spitalerstraße 11.
Since 1890 he was married to Johanna Emma Luise Christine, geb. Linck (1866–1919), a daughter of the brewery owner in Rostock Albert Linck (1827–1896). The couple had three daughters and one son. After Wilhelm Sellschopp's death, his son Rudolf Sellschopp (1903–1992) took over the business that has existed to this day and is now located on Rosenstrasse.
