Wilhelm Velke

Wilhelm Velke (born January 22, 1854 in Velpke , † January 28, 1940 in Gießen ) was a German historian and librarian .

Life

From 1873 Velke studied classical philology and history in Leipzig and Marburg . During his studies in 1874 he became a member of the Alemannia Marburg fraternity . After his studies, he was on 20 December 1877 at the University of Marburg Dr. phil. did his doctorate and passed his exams for higher teaching a year later. He also held the title of professor in later years. In 1876 he worked as an "unskilled worker" at the library of the University of Marburg, and from 1877 to 1878 at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . 1878/1879 Velke was then assistant at the library of the Institute for Classical Studies in Strasbourg .

In 1879 Velke came to Mainz and worked as a librarian in the Mainz City Library. From 1885 he was finally hired as the city librarian and in 1891 was appointed senior librarian. Until 1907 he was in charge of the Mainz City Library and the associated institutions Mainz City Archives , Gutenberg Museum and Münzkabinett. From 1883 Velke was also director of the city collections for science and art, among other things, responsible for the painting collection of the Museum of Antiquities (today's Mainz State Museum ). Velke's successor as head of the city library was Gustav Binz from 1908 ; Velke himself retired in 1913 and later retired to Giessen.

One focus of his academic work was, among other things, the history of book printing and the historical environment of Johannes Gutenberg . He was a co-founder of the Gutenberg Society and the Gutenberg Museum . He was also responsible for the “celebrations for the 450th anniversary of the art of printing” that took place in Mainz in 1900.
