Wilhelm von Nolcken

Baron Johann Heinrich Wilhelm von Nolcken (born August 18 . Jul / thirtieth August  1813 . Greg in Hasik on Oelsel ; † 5. February 1898 in Dresden ) was a Russian engineer - Major General and Baltic German lepidopterist .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was a member of the von Nolcken noble family . His parents were the Livonian regional court secretary and heir to Pichtendahl and Lodenhof as well as co-owners of Hasik, Baron Hermann von Nolcken and Jeanette von Kräfting adH Kaunispäh .

Career

Nolcken served as a lieutenant in 1833 and as a colonel in Russian services in 1858 . Soon afterwards he received his farewell as major general .

He was owner of the goods Picht Dahl and Rotziküll on Saaremaa and on Halswigshof in Kurland .

As a lepidopterist, Nolcken maintained international relationships, particularly close ones to Philipp Christoph Zeller in Meseritz . In 1870 and 1871 he undertook two lepidopterological collecting trips to South America . He co-founder and honorary member of the Natural Research Association in Riga and President of the Association for Customer Ösels .

It was thanks to him that the Russian Baltic provinces were still considered to be “the best lepidopteran research”, as Hans Kauri put it.

family

Nolcken married Eudoxia Prochorowna Kantemirowa († 1900). A son Nikolai, who died young, and daughter Sophie von Nolcken (* 1854), who married Baron Heimar von Nolcken (1835–1890) at Halswigshof in Courland in 1872 , emerged from the marriage.
