Wilhelm of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

Wilhelm Carl Christian von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (* March 12, 1701 in Gotha ; † May 31, 1771 in Tonna ) was a prince from the Saxon-Gotha-Altenburg branch of the Ernestine Wettins and an imperial general field master .

Life

Wilhelm was the second son of Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1676–1732) from his marriage to Magdalena Augusta (1679–1740), daughter of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst .

Wilhelm entered the service of Emperor Charles VI as general sergeant in 1734 . , where he led the two regiments that his brother Friedrich III. left to the emperor in the fight against France. In 1738 he became Lieutenant General Field Marshal and in 1750 General Feldzeugmeister. He finally resigned from this position after he failed twice in 1753 and 1760 with his application for the office of Reich Field Marshal. He took up residence in Tonna.

Wilhelm married Anna (1709–1758) in Hamburg on November 8, 1742, daughter of Christian August von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and aunt of Catherine the Great . The marriage remained childless.
