Life

Willem van Eysinga was born in Noordwijkerhout in 1878 as the son of Junkers Tjalling Aedo Johan van Eysinga (born April 2, 1846 in Leeuwarden; † January 11, 1898 in The Hague) and his wife Henriette Jacoba Johanna Kluit (born January 30, 1852 in Leiden; † May 3, 1931 in The Hague). After attending grammar school, he studied law and political science at the University of Leiden , where he completed his doctoral examination in law in 1900 and obtained a doctorate in political science six years later . From 1902 to 1908 he worked for the Dutch Foreign Ministry, during which time he represented his home country during the second Hague Peace Conference in 1907 . He then became a professor of public law at the University of Groningen in 1908 , where he stayed until 1912. In the same year he switched to a professorship for international law at the University of Leiden, where he also served as rector in 1928/1929 .

In addition to teaching the then Princess of the Netherlands in constitutional and international law, he also taught as a lecturer at the Hague Academy for International Law in 1923 and 1927 . On September 25, 1930 he was elected judge at the Permanent International Court of Justice , his term of office began in early 1931. Since the judges' elections, which were scheduled for 1939, were not held due to the beginning of World War II , he remained formally until the court was dissolved in office after the end of the war, although the court's activities ceased in 1942.

The works of Willem van Eysinga include a biography of the legal scholar Hugo Grotius , who is considered one of the co-founders of natural law and international law, as well as a treatise on the history of international law in the Netherlands. He died in Leiden in 1961.
