Willi Papert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willi Papert (born April 2, 1924 in Arnsdorf , Czechoslovakia , † February 23, 1980 in Ravensburg ) was a German arranger , conductor , composer and musician .

Life

From 1934 to 1938 Papert was a singer with the " Dresdner Kapellknaben ", who traditionally recruited their offspring in Catholic Bohemia. As a musician, he flirted with his Bohemian origins throughout his life, but without restricting himself to Bohemian music. His musical foundation was laid in Dresden, which would later enable him to work as an arranger, conductor and composer without formal music studies.

Attending high school was followed by military service in the army radio center on the Eastern Front (infantry) and English prisoner of war. Released from this, he and a comrade from the war came to Oberreitnau , where some former soldiers of the Wehrmacht formed a vaudeville troupe. Papert was now a clown in Upper Swabia for some time . When he borrowed a clarinet for a clowning, he found his calling again and settled in Oberzell near Ravensburg . As the conductor of the Oberzell Musikverein, he soon made a name for himself in Upper Swabia by performing his own arrangements for a wind orchestra: the Schubert Mass in 1949, the overture to the "Barber of Seville" in 1954. Despite continuing musical success, he did not manage to get a permanent position over the always fragile existence of a free artist. Hans Felix Husadel's attempt to install it as his successor at the Ravensburg Orchestra Society remained an episode, as did the position of head of the brass music department of the Storz music publisher in Osterode ( Harz ).

conductor

As a conductor, Willi Papert was considered a jovial music companion, but also a perfectionist in intonation and interpretation. During his life, Papert conducted the music associations of Baienfurt (1975–1977), Berg (Schussental) (1953–1958, 1973–1977), Oberzell (1949–1960, 1961–1967), Schlier , Vogt and Waldburg - acting as the municipal orchestras Ravensburg and Weingarten . He also directed several dance orchestras: the "Altdorfer Musikanten", the farmers' bands Oberzell and Oberteuringen , the "Berger Dorfmusikanten", the "Rudi Merk Chapel" in Edelhagen cast, the Oberzell dance band as well as the Baienfurt Liederkranz and the Ravensburg Post Choir.

Honors and afterlife

Willi Papert was honorary conductor of the Berg and Oberzell music associations (1976) and district conductor of the Ravensburg brass band association , whose gold badge he received in 1979. On the occasion of his death he was characterized as someone who contributed to folk music becoming successful music . The municipality of Berg has dedicated a street to him: the "Papertweg". In 2009 the village of Taldorf followed this example and also honored his services by naming the street: "Willi-Papert-Straße" in Oberzell.

Works (selection)

Papert created 20 of his own compositions and almost 500 arrangements, Bert Kämpfert and Ernst Mosch are considered to be his important role models, and he was certainly not unimpressed by Hans Felix Husadel .

Quote from a rating game report from 1954

“The director of the band has made an attempt with a new line-up for which we owe him great thanks in the interest of the further development of our folk music. He presumably assumed that all folk music driving forces of a community were to be brought together in an orchestra, in order to form the often existing different groups into a useful whole. The thought is good without a doubt. In this way, the saxophones and accordions that may be or needed in a community come into useful use. The editor arranged the "barber" very skillfully for his occupation. The execution was also very neat. A few important exhibitions are noted in the score. The judges will follow the future development of this new line-up with great interest. "
