Hubertus fair

Ecumenical Hubertus Mass in the autumn forest

The Hubertus Mass is an instrumental sounding mass or a hunter worship service . The event is held annually in honor of God and in memory of Saint Hubertus of Liège around November 3rd, Hubertus Day . According to tradition, Hubertus, as a young nobleman, was a passionately dissolute hunter who saw the shooting of game as an end in itself. Later Hubertus recognized creatures of divine origin in all beings and therefore used them to care for them. This basic attitude of "respect for the creature" was incorporated into the principles of behavior of the hunters as a hunt justice .

history

The origins of the Hubertus Mass lay in France and Belgium, where a special liturgy developed in the course of the 19th century in which parforce horns participated. In Germany, this tradition began in the 1950s, the music usually on the Parforcehorn in it are blown. This horn was mainly used in Bohemia and Austria in the 19th century , but lost its importance with the decline in courtly hunting. It is very similar in pitch and construction to the French trompe, but sounds softer and fuller in tone. Above all, it has a wider coil diameter so that it fits over the three-cornered hat, the hat of the rider ( picor ).

Parforce horn blowers at a Hubertus fair

The Hubertus fair is closely related to the changing phenomena of the annual cycle. It is usually performed in the autumn forest, which is characterized by its beautifully colored foliage , the harvest of fruits and the hunt. If the Hubertus Mass takes place in a church, it is usually decorated with utensils from the forest and the corridor. The hunters bring their horns (and sometimes their dogs) to worship.

With the blowing of the Hubertus Mass , the horn players are following a centuries-old custom , in which the blowing horns in the forest replace the missing church music for holding the liturgical mass before the start or at the end of the hunt . The so-called cloches et carillons create impressive bell-like sounds that are hardly inferior to the large church bells in their effect.

In the vast majority of cases today, a celebration of the Hubertus Mass is not a Holy Mass , but a church concert with parts of the divine service or an often ecumenical word divine service with the celebration of Mass borrowed from musical pieces.

Special compositions

The compilation Grande Messe de Saint Hubert by Jules Cantin (1874–1956) published in 1934 is widespread or most popular as a sheet music template for a Hubertus Mass in Germany . In turn, it is based on collections by French authors from the 19th century. According to the Thiberge handbook, the first melodies were probably written by Hubert Obry (1820–1850). Other signal and fanfare collections from this period come from Estival 1840, Tellier 1860 and later Normand 1874, Sombrun 1880 and de la Porte 1896.

Also, the Rendez-vous de chasse by Gioacchino Rossini often heard in this context.

Because of its proximity to liturgy, the Hubertus Mass by Heinrich Hefner and Adalbert Frey, premiered in 1987 in Mainz Cathedral , is becoming increasingly popular.

criticism

While the hunting associations understand and propagate the Hubertus fair as the “ harvest festival of the hunters”, protests and demonstrations by animal rights activists are directed against parishes that organize such fairs. The animal welfare organization PETA is calling for it to be abolished. The German indie / punk rock band Muff Potter dedicated a song to this topic: "After the Hubertus Mass" criticizes the hunt and its Christian legitimation, which is based on the biblical statement that man is the " crown of creation ".
