William Becher

William Becher (born December 14, 1898 in Dresden as Wilhelm Egon Becher , † August 13, 1969 in Lindau ) was a German writer .

Life

William Becher spent the first years of his life in Dresden until he moved to Zurich with his family in 1907 . There he attended the arts and crafts school for three years and initially worked as a painter. In 1918 the family moved to Lindau in Lake Constance, where Becher lived and worked until the end of his life.

In 1921, Becher married Färber's daughter Hedwig Meyer, with whom he had four children over the years - Lia, Willi, Hedi and Arno. In 1946 he became a father again, daughter Margot comes from an extramarital relationship.

During the time of National Socialism, from October 26, 1942 to December 23, 1942, Becher was in custody in the court prison in Munich on Neudeck. The accusation was that Becher allegedly criticized the National Socialist regime - the arrest warrant was however overturned.

William Becher died in Lindau in 1969.

The author wrote more than 600 poems and his work was also well received by contemporary writers such as Hermann Hesse , Ricarda Huch , Gertrud le Fort and Maria Müller-Gögler . He maintained a lively correspondence with these people and could count on their support.

In 1957, at the instigation of Hermann Hesse, Becher was awarded a prize awarded by the federal states on the occasion of Hesse's 80th birthday.

Documentary film

In 1998 the grandson of the Lindau poet produced a 30-minute documentary entitled "I counted the stars - Approaching the poet William Becher" . William Becher was portrayed by the Nuremberg actor Roland Eugen Beiküfner. The shooting took place at original locations on the island of Lindau, as well as in the rooms of the Nuremberg Theater Rootslöffel.

On December 7, 2016, the theater group Art and Drama presented the production William Becher - Life and Work in Lindau , directed by Friederike Pöhlmann-Grießinger at the Lindau City Theater with Roland Eugen Beiküfner in the role of William Becher. Friederike Pöhlmann-Grießinger led through the play with biographical chronicles and contemporary historical facts. This performance was musically framed by Johanna Eras from the German Medical Orchestra on the cello. The production was created in cooperation with the grandson of the writer Frank Becher, the Franz Michael Felder Archive in Bregenz , the Lindau City Library and the Lindau Cultural Office under the direction of Alexander Warmbrunn. William Becher - Life and Work in Lindau is the first part of the art and drama literature series Trilogy of the forgotten writers .
