William Brinkley

William Clark "Bill" Brinkley (born September 10, 1917 in Custer City , Oklahoma , † November 22, 1993 in McAllen , Texas ) was an American writer and journalist . Brinkley gained notoriety through his novel Wasser hat keine Balken (Don't Go Near the Water) from 1956, the film adaptation of which came to German-speaking cinemas in 1958 under the title Go not too close to the water . His post-apocalyptic novel The Last Ship from 1988 has been broadcast as a television series under the title of the same name since 2014.

Life

William Brinkley was born in Custer City, about 150 kilometers west of Oklahoma City , the son of a pastor. The youngest of five children studied at the University of Oklahoma and graduated as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa student association in 1940.

During World War II , Brinkley served as an officer in the United States Navy . His areas of activity included Europe and the Pacific, where he was primarily employed as a public affairs officer.

After completing his studies, Brinkley worked as a journalist, including for the daily newspapers The Oklahoman , The Washington Post and Life magazine. He was a member of the United States' National Press Club until his death .

Brinkley committed at the age of 76 years at his home in McAllen, near the Gulf of Mexico with an overdose of barbiturates suicide , having previously several years from severe depression had suffered. He left behind his wife, Jean Brinkley, sister, Virginia McCabe, brother Paul Brinkley, and stepson, David Shelander, who died in September 2013.
