Life
William Cagney was born in 1905 to Carolyn Elizabeth (née Nelson, 1877-1945) from Norway and James Frances Cagney (1875-1918) of Irish descent in New York . William, who looked very much like his brother, entered the film business through his six-year-old brother, actor James Cagney . So he played from 1933 small supporting roles in films by Warner Brothers. At times he was also active as a talent scout. From 1940 he worked several times as a producer of his famous brother's films, which he also managed at the same time. In 1942 he founded his own small production company called William Cagney Productions, which gave his brother more artistic freedom in realizing his film projects. As a co-producer of Yankee Doodle Dandy , he received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture in 1943 along with Jack L. Warner and Hal B. Wallis . The revue film with a dancing James Cagney was defeated by the war drama Mrs. Miniver . In the film noir You will not see tomorrow ( Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye , 1950) William appeared in a small role as James' brother.
With his first wife Boots Mallory , with whom he was married from 1933 to 1946, Cagney adopted the twins Jill and William. From the marriage with his second wife Nadine Crumney Parker, which lasted from 1951 to 1954, a son named Steven was born. Cagney died of a heart attack in Newport Beach , California , in 1988, aged 82 . His grave is located in the Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar .
