William Christopher Atkinson

William Christopher Atkinson (born August 9, 1902 in Belfast , † September 19, 1992 in Shipton-under-Wychwood , Oxfordshire ) was a British Romanist , historian, Hispanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

Atkinson studied in Belfast and Madrid and graduated in 1925 with a master's degree. From 1926 to 1932 he taught at Armstrong College, University of Durham in Newcastle upon Tyne . From 1932 to 1972 he was Professor of Spanish at the University of Glasgow Stevenson (from 1944 to 1947 also Dean). From 1966 he was director of the Glasgow Institute for Latin American Studies.

Atkinson was honorary professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1946). He was Commander of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique (1972).
