William D'Arcy

William Gerald D'Arcy (born August 29, 1931 in Calgary , Alberta , † December 16, 1999 ) was an American botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " D'Arcy ".

William D'Arcy first studied economic policy at the University of Alberta . He completed this course in 1954. Between 1960 and 1966 he owned a beverage factory in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands , which he also managed himself. During his time in the Virgin Islands, he discovered his passion for the island's flora. After being encouraged by several botanists, he began studying botany at the University of Florida . His master's thesis dealt with the species of nightshade . He then took up doctoral studies at Washington University and the Missouri Botanical Garden . His doctoral thesis dealt with the nightshade family of Panama. He received his doctorate in 1972 and then began to work for the Missouri Botanical Garden. D'Arcy developed the first large database for recording country-specific flora in the 1980s. He has participated in more than forty scientific expeditions to Canada, tropical America, Africa, Madagascar and China.
