William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas
William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas, 11th Earl of Angus (* 1589 - 19 February 1660 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Douglas family .
Life
William was a son of William Douglas, 10th Earl of Angus and his wife Elizabeth Oliphant. He followed his father in 1611 as 11th Earl of Angus .
In order to escape the religious turmoil as well as for spa purposes because of poor health, William stayed on the continent from 1616 to 1620 and from 1623 to 1625. After years of loyalty to the Scottish King during the Civil War, William was raised to Marquess of Douglas in 1633 with the subordinate titles of Earl of Angus and Lord of Abernethy and Jedburgh Forest . He also served as Chief Lieutenant of the Borders .
The Marquess took part in the military expedition of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose in 1649 and fought in the Battle of Philiphaugh, in which he escaped but was captured, from which he was later released for a ransom. He lived and died at Douglas Castle in South Lanarkshire .
