William Francis Copper
William Francis Kupfer (born January 28, 1909 in Brooklyn , † January 2, 1998 in Valhalla (New York) ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman of the Maryknoll Missionary Order and Bishop of Taichung , Taiwan .
Life
William Francis Kupfer attended Catholic schools and developed an early desire to pursue a career as a priest. In 1927 he was admitted to S. Mary's Seminary in Queens , New York , where he soon developed a desire to go to China as a missionary . Because of this, he joined the Maryknoll Missionary Order in 1928 . On June 11, 1933, Kupfer was ordained a priest.
Missionary work in China
Following his ordination, Kupfer was sent by his order as a missionary to Wuzhou ( Guangxi ) in China. Kupfer learned the Cantonese language and stayed there for a total of 14 years (with an interruption between 1944 and 1945 due to the Second Sino-Japanese War ). In 1948, Kupfer went to Maryknoll House in Hong Kong as head of department and procurator .
Prefect and Bishop in Taiwan
In 1951, Kupfer was appointed Apostolic Prefect of the Taichung Diocese in Taiwan by the Holy See , where he began to learn the Taiwanese language . With the conversion of his diocese to a diocese in 1962, Kupfer became the first bishop of the Taichung diocese. He held this position until he retired in 1986. Between 1962 and 1965, Kupfer attended all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council in Rome as bishop .
