William Lionel Wyllie

William Lionel Wyllie RA (born July 5, 1851 in London , † April 6, 1931 ibid) was an English marine painter .

Life

Wyllie was the elder son of the painter William Morison Wyllie and brother of Charles William Wyllie, who also became a painter. His half-brother was Lionel Smythe , who was also a respected painter. In 1865 he completed the required basic training at the Heatherley School and studied from 1866-9 at the Royal Academy in London under such well-known greats as Frederic Leighton , John Everett Millais , Edwin Landseer and other painters of the Victorian era. In 1869 he was awarded the Turner Medal for the best landscape painting "Dawn after a Storm".

In 1899 he was admitted to the Royal Academy and exhibited his works The Phantom Ship and Davy Jones' Locker . He created numerous watercolors , oil paintings , copper engravings and etchings . During the First World War he served as a war correspondent . His 1917 painting Iron Duke Opening Fire , which is now owned by Nick Jellicoe , dates from this period .
