William Njoku

William Chidi Njoku (born March 5, 1972 in Accra ) is a retired Canadian basketball player of Ghanaian descent.

Life

Njoku came to Canada from Ghana in 1976 and initially played football. Because of his height, he ended up playing basketball. He played as a student at Halifax West High School in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and as a student also in the city of Halifax at Saint Mary's University (1990 to 1994) in the Canadian University League. In the seasons 1993/94 and 1994/95 he scored 25.2 points per encounter. In the 92/93 season he was named the best player in the Canadian University League. In 2013, Njoku was inducted into the Saint Mary's University sports hall of fame . In 2011 he was accepted into the Sports Hall of Fame of the Province of Nova Scotia.

In the 1994 NBA draft , the 2.06 meter tall winger was selected by the Indiana Pacers (second round, 41st place). However, he did not succeed in making the NBA. Njoku began his professional career with the French second division club Élan Sportif Chalonnais , for whom he scored an average of 13.8 points and nine rebounds in six games in the 1994/95 season. He then played in the US league USBL (Jersey Turnpikes and Atlantic City Seagulls), in 1996/97 he was under contract with Besiktas Istanbul in Turkey .

This was followed by positions at Brandt Hagen in Germany , Leuven in Belgium , Illiabum and Oliveirense in Portugal , Al Jaish Damascus in Syria , Vilvoorde in Belgium, Bashkimi Prizren in Kosovo and Skopje in Macedonia . In 2005 he ended his career, in 2012/13 he was again active as a player, with the Saint John Mill Rats in the Canadian NBL league.

From September 2007 to September 2010, he headed college sports at Crandall University before setting up freelance as a motivational speaker and lecturer.

National team

In 1991 he participated with Canada's selection in the Junior World Championship, he was part of Canada's senior team at the World Championships in 1994 and 1998.
