William Pape , actually Friedrich Georg William Pape, (born September 3, 1859 in Karlshütte near Rendsburg , † December 13, 1920 in Stockholm ) was a German painter and illustrator .

Life

Wilhelm Pape first studied philosophy and natural sciences at the University of Berlin . He then attended the art academy in Berlin there. He received further lessons from Hermann Prell and at the Académie Julian in Paris from Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant . Study trips took him to Italy, Denmark and Russia. He painted vedutas in Berlin, but mainly specialized in history painting . The picture “One Reich, One People, One God”, which was presented on January 18, 1896, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the German Empire , attracted the attention of the Imperial Court, which also bought the picture.

The above picture and the unveiling of the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument in Berlin served as a template for the high permanent values of 5 and 3 Reichsmarks in the stamp series Representative Representations of the German Empire from 1900 onwards . This series was a supplement to the well-known Germania postage stamps for values from one mark and were therefore printed millions of times. The picture of the founding of the empire and the confirmation of the Crown Prince and Prince Eitel Friedrich from 1898 were in the personal possession of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Pape was able to portray both the Kaiser and his family personally several times. He also used the monogram WP.

Pape died in an accident in Stockholm in 1920.
