William Reid Dick
Sir William Reid Dick KCVO RA (born January 13, 1879 in Glasgow , † October 1, 1961 in London ) was a Scottish sculptor who was known for the innovative stylization of form in his monuments and the simplicity of his portraits . He became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1921 and a full member in 1928. Dick was President of the Royal Society of British Sculptors from 1933 to 1938 . It was built by King George V in 1935 to Knight Commander ofRoyal Victorian Order beaten. From 1938 until his death he was a sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland for King George VI .
At the age of twelve, Dick was apprenticed to a stonemason in his hometown . Over the next five years he learned to work with stone during the day, and in the evening he attended drawing and modeling classes. In 1896 his apprenticeship was over. He then moved to the Glasgow School of Art and began teaching at the Bellshill Academy in Lanarkshire . From 1908 he lived in London and exhibited in galleries there.
Dick was known as a sculptor of the portrait statue during his lifetime. The sculptures at Unilever House on Blackfriars Bridge and the eagle on the Royal Air Force Memorial on the Victoria Embankment are by him. In Regent's Park his fountain stands Boy with Frog (1936). He was also the creator of the imposing bronze statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in London's Grosvenor Square (in front of the United States Embassy), George V in the House of Lords and another in Jersey , the John Soane statue at the Bank of England . On October 22, 1949 , the equestrian statue of Lady Godiva was unveiled in Broadgate, Coventry , England, a £ 20,000 gift from Mr. WH Bassett-Green, a Coventry compatriot.
His archive is in the Tate Gallery . He was buried in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
