William Stuhr (born February 10, 1882 in Aalborg , † August 1, 1958 Skagen ) was a Danish painter in the succession of the Skagen artists' colony.

Life

Stuhr was the son of the machine manufacturer Carl Christopher Stuhr (1839-1927) and his wife Dorothea Marie (née Jensen, 1851-1911). He first learned painting from 1900 to 1901 at the Aalborg Teknisk skole and from 1904 to 1907 attended the painting school of Peder Severin Krøyer in Copenhagen , where Laurits Tuxen and Johan Gudmann Rohde were his teachers. From 1901 to 1904 he traveled to Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland, from 1907 to 1908 via Paris, where he met the pointillist Georges Seurat , further to Madrid and from 1911 to 1912 again via Paris to Florence. This was followed by further stays in Paris (1923) and a trip to the USA, where he stayed in New York in 1925 and in Florids, Palm Beach and the Bahamas in 1926. In 1929 he visited Venice.

Stuhr received several scholarships, including “De Bielkeske Legater” in 1913, “Den Hielmstierne-Rosencroneske Stiftelse” in 1914, “Ronges legat” in 1916, “Den Raben-Levetzauske Fond” in 1916 and 1924, “Krafts legat” in 1917. He regularly took part in exhibitions with his works, for example from 1911 in Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, in Charleville or in 1929 in Toronto. Works by him can be found in the Danish museums of Aalborg and Skagen, among others. The impressionist-pointillist influence of his Paris studies can be seen in his extremely colorful and luminous landscapes and flowers. In addition to his own works, he also copied old masters.

He belongs to the second generation of the artist colony of Skagen on the northern tip of Jutland .

family

On January 25, 1911, in Copenhagen, he married Louise Anna Catharine (née Rickertsen, born March 8, 1885), a daughter of Vilhelm Nicolaus Rickertsen and Catharine (née Juergensen). In 1912 the couple moved to Skagen. Here Stuhr bought a house at Svallerbakken 12 in Vesterby in 1916 and had a studio built. He was sometimes referred to as “Skagenhavnens Painter”, but he chose his motifs in different places in Skagen, preferably in the Vesterby area. Every year he planted sunflowers in his garden, which he immortalized in many flower pictures. He spent the winter in Christianshavn .

Stuhr had several older siblings:

  • Ane Martine Stuhr (born October 2, 1873)
  • Henriette Wilhemine Stuhr (born October 20, 1875)
  • Peter Philip Stuhr (born January 8, 1877)
  • Immanuel Stuhr (June 17, 1879 to January 1, 1956).
