William Warburton

William Warburton (born December 24, 1698 in Newark-on-Trent , † June 7, 1779 in Gloucester ) was an English critic , Bishop of Gloucester and editor of a complete edition of the works of William Shakespeare .

life and work

Warburton was born in Newark. His father, who was part of an old Cheshire family, was a law enforcement officer there. Warburton graduated from Oakham and Newark Grammar School . In 1714 he continued his training with the lawyer Kirke in East Markham , Nottinghamshire . After completing his training, he returned to Newark to complete his practical training as a lawyer. In 1736 he published The Alliance Between Church and State in response to Benjamin Hoadly's 1735 publication .

In 1747 he published a complete edition of Shakespeare's works: The Works of Shakespeare. in eight volumes. The text is based on the edition by Lewis Theobald from 1733 and has no independent authority.
