He was the son of Ralph de Warenne and his wife Emma and a great-nephew of the Duchess Gunnora , wife of the Norman Duke Richard I. As a young man he helped defend the position of Duke William the Conqueror in Normandy . The battles between 1052 and 1054, which culminated in the Battle of Mortemer , are particularly noteworthy . As a result of the loss of the battle, Roger de Mortemer lost large parts of his land, which William de Warenne received from Duke Wilhelm. The family name de Warenne is derived from a castle of the same name on the Varenne river, which flows through the area that Wilhelm received in Normandy.

His property included the lands of Lewes, where he lived in Lewes Castle , which he built , as well as the lands around the castles he also built, Castle Acre Castle in Norfolk and Conisbrough Castle in South Yorkshire . At the time of the Domesday Book (1086) he was one of the largest landowners in England.
William was loyal to William II and may have been named Earl of Surrey after the 1088 Rebellion . He died a short time later of an injury sustained in the crackdown on the rebellion.
