Willibald Apollinar Maier

Willibald Apollinar Maier (born February 19, 1823 in Pfalzpaint , † May 5, 1874 in Regensburg ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and theologian .

Life

Maier came from a poor family. His godfather, the cathedral preacher Hoffmann, took him to Eichstätt at an early age . There he first attended the Latin school before he came to the St. Stephan college in Augsburg in 1835 . After graduating with honors from the college in 1839, he went to Rome to attend the Collegium Germanicum . In 1842 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , in 1846 he was ordained a priest and in 1847 the doctorate to Dr. theol.

After returning to Germany in 1847, Maier became a chaplain in Stöckelsberg . This was followed by positions as a pastor in Neumarkt , Monheim and Ellingen . In 1854 he became editor of the newspaper Deutsche Volkshalle in Cologne. After their involuntary dissolution, he took over the editing of the newspaper Deutschland in Frankfurt am Main. And this sheet was liquidated, he was Bishop Ignatius of Senestrey as episcopal secretary to Regensburg appointed .

Maier worked in Regensburg as the right hand man of the bishop, whom he also accompanied to the First Vatican Council in Rome in 1870. Initially cathedral vicar he was promoted to cathedral capitular in Regensburg in 1860 . He also supported Friedrich Pustet in his theological publication activities.
