Willy-August Linnemann (born June 4, 1914 in Harrislee , † August 22, 1985 in Gentofte ) was a German - Danish writer and recipient of the Søren Gyldendal Prize and the Critics' Prize . He was best known for his multi-volume novel cycles about life in the German-Danish border area.

Life

Linnemann, whose father grew up in the Balkans and later worked in brickworks in Jutland , Schleswig and Lippe-Detmold , grew up in the German-Danish border area. He attended a German elementary school, then Duborg-Skolen in Flensburg and finally the school Vestjysk school in Tarm . After graduating from high school, he began a course at the Folkehøjskole in Askov in 1933 and acquired Danish citizenship in 1936 . He then took up studies at the University of Copenhagen , but increasingly devoted himself to writing.

In 1939 he made his literary debut with the novel Sangen om de lyse nætter , which was followed by travelogues and novels. He gained greater fame through his five-volume series of European stories , the first volume of which, Bogen om det skjulte ansigt, appeared in 1958 and the last volume, Byen ligger skjult af lyset, was published in 1966 and is set in Flensburg and southern Schleswig .

After he was awarded the newly founded Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1958 , he received the Critics' Prize (Denmark) in 1959 (for the novel Døden må have en årsag ) and De Gyldne Laurbær .

He gained widespread fame primarily through a cycle of novels published between 1968 and 1974 about an aging politician in the German-Danish border region and his children. This cycle includes Fabrikanten (1968), Planlæggeren (1969), Handelsmanden (1970), Helbrederen (1971), Forkynderen (1972), Lovgiveren (1973) and Protestants (1974).

He then published another cycle of novels about life in the border area, this time dealing with the concept of "borders" in the human and geographical sense. This time, however, the individual volumes in the series were also self-contained. This series includes the volumes Himlens genskær i byens ruder (1975), Lyset mellem træerne (1976), Bølgerne på fjorden (1977) and Blæsten gennem gaderne (1978).
