The Winchuck River is a short river in Oregon , United States that flows through the Siskiyou National Forest to the Pacific Ocean . From its origin near Elk Mountain, the river flows steadily west and drains into the sea at the Crissey Field State Recreation Site , about one kilometer north of the Oregon- California state line and about eight kilometers south of Brookings . The origin of the name is uncertain; possibly winchuck is an expression from the Chinook jargon for windy water , as stormy water. It is also possible that the name is derived from the local indigenous name for a woman.

It is formed in the south of Curry County from its East Fork and Bear Creek . Directly below it flows into Salmon Creek on the left , then Elk Creek and Deer Creek follow from the right . Further down, Moser Creek and South Fork Winchuck River flow towards it, each from the left . The river then leaves Oregon for a short distance and runs within Del Norte County , California, before returning to Oregon. The Winchuck River passes under US Highway 101 shortly before it flows into the Pacific . The Winchuck River Road runs for a large part of the river course parallel to this on the north bank.

King salmon and silver salmon , rainbow trout and cutthroat trout live in the main branch of the river . Fishing on the river is limited, especially on the lower reaches.

The forests in the catchment area of the river include different types of vegetation. including Douglas fir , Oregon maple and strawberry trees , typical of the Southern Oregon Coast Range , the coastal Siskiyou Mountains and the Redwood Zone. Most of the remaining redwood forests of Oregon are within the catchment area of the Winchuck River.
